I teach at a Title 1 school in Southeast Raleigh, North Carolina. Our first-graders are kind, curious, feisty, and they LOVE to read!
So far, my team's first-graders have enjoyed many books together through read alouds.
They adore being read to. From The Night of the Veggie Monster by George McClements to Mary Hoffman's Amazing Grace, students hear stories come alive and are then inspired to recreate that experience as readers, when they hold the books themselves, and writers, when they write books in the same styles.
My Project
When students are learning to read, there are many ways to support them, and an important one is a listening center, which we do not currently have at our school. At a listening center, up to 6 children hold the physical book while listening to it read aloud by an audiobook reader (often the author, or an actor who provides dramatic emphasis!). While we read aloud every day to our students, listening to audiobooks is not just an engaging way to increase the amount of books read aloud that each child hears. It's a way for a child to hear a book while following the text up close and learning new words in print.
Funding this project will put a listening center in each first grade classroom at our school, and high quality books in the hands of 88 first-graders.
I love to get lost in a book. With a listening center available to them daily, our first-graders will get the chance to immerse themselves in a great book without the help of a teacher, even if they can't yet read all of the book by themselves.
