This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Remember the first time you read a book that you liked so much you couldn't put it down? I'd love to expose my students to a variety of books in different genres in our listening center, so they can each find a book they absolutely love!

Each student in my classroom comes with a unique background, creating and environment that is rich in both, culture and experience.

They are diverse in many areas such as learning styles, language proficiency, and ability levels in the various curriculum areas. Our school is a Title I school and many of our students are faced with a variety of challenges. Poverty, learning a new language, and adapting to a new culture are daily struggles they deal with, in addition to the regular stresses of being a student striving to meet standards and expectations.

My Project

In our classroom we work on strategies and skills to help students develop independence in literacy. Through a program called The Daily Five, students read to themselves, read to someone, work on writing, work on spelling and vocabulary, and lastly, listen to reading. Listening to reading is an important component of developing independence in my students' literacy. Hearing a book on CD while following along in the book, will provide students with the opportunity to see how the written words are read with fluidity and expression. Our current collection of books on audio CD are somewhat scarce, and of little to no interest to students. I would like to provide students with a variety of choices includeing Holes, Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry, and The Lightning Thief. Having this variety will help to increase their motivation and interest to engage in a text through our listening center.

By donating to this project, you will help students gain exposure to a variety of texts in different genres.

The opportunity to choose from many books on audio CD and find one that is highly interesting, will contribute to the overall development of each student and their literacy skills.
