This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students see school as a safe place and come each day ready to learn. All students at our school qualify for free or reduced price lunch. They strive to make the most of each day, despite the challenges they may be facing at home. My class loves challenging themselves to learn more, and are eager to see their growth in reading every day.

My students love coming to school each day to learn more about themselves as individuals.

They enjoy being able to show their understanding in many different ways, both on paper and though technology and love being given the chance to boost their computer literacy skills. Utilizing technology not only builds these important life skills that will help my students be successful outside of school, but also allow for differentiation that is necessary for each of them to succeed. In addition to growing more comfortable and confident with themselves as an individual, my students strive everyday to show their ability to collaborate with their peers while demonstrating skills necessary for success later in their lives.

My Project

My students love to read, and despite being struggling readers they enjoy getting new meaning and context from text (print and digital). To help differentiate learning, my school has been using a wide range of digital literacy tools to help grow each individual student's ability. This way, in addition to meeting in small groups with me throughout the week, they also get to play fun and engaging literacy and math games at their level. Some of their favorite activities is reading their digital books out-loud, and narrating their Scratch Jr. projects so that they can hear themselves read and send their recordings to me and their parents.

The worst part of recording your masterpiece is to listen to it and find out that someone is talking too loudly in the background!

Our current headphones don't have a mic built in so often the Chromebooks pick up on background noise (because no classroom is ever completely silent). This means that if one student is trying to record, they may end up frustrated and have to re-do it when they play it back to find that their friend is heard in the background. Having a set of headphones with built in mics will help students be able to record themselves effectively, as well as increase the number of programs we are able to utilize for recording.

Students would then be able to more consistently get good quality recordings which will help their fluency, interview other students on Scratch while other groups are also working, and not run into the frustration that comes from having to re-do a 3 minute long story.
