Help me give my students a set of quality headphones that are durable and will not break! Help me also give my students a chemistry set and a set of agar plates to explore biology!
My students are from rural Alaska, a small town of 1500 people. My students are from a remote rural part of Alaska with a high percentage of Alaska Native students, where there is high-poverty and un-employment. Our school is a Title I school, with over 90% of the families in our school falling below the poverty line.
Despite their sometimes rough background, these students are incredibly resilient and positive, and, just like kids anywhere, have a bright hope for the future and a love of learning!
My 14 kindergarteners are like a little family, they look past color, and just enjoy being together. They love coming to school, we have so much fun together, and they are making wonderful progress this year!
My Project
Our students use an online reading program called Lexia to supplement their reading curriculum. It is an awesome program that they love, and we see great results in reading achievement with this program! However, the headphones provided by our school were cheap and all but 2 have broken in the first semester. Now the kids are doing their computer time without headphones, and it makes it extremely difficult for the kids to do listening and phonics work on their computers when 13 other kids are doing the same thing in the same classroom!
Having a set of quality headphones that will last from year to year will help my students advance in their phonics and early reading skills without the distraction of other students' lessons echoing in their ears!
I am also starting an exciting chemistry unit, and we need the chemicals in this kit to do some of our experiments! We also, as a class, are doing a fantastic project for the science fair with the agar plates, by taking samples of surfaces we touch on a daily basis to see what kind of bacteria grows!
