My Students

I am pleased to introduce my happy and inquisitive classroom of first graders! Students in my class are between the ages 5-7 and are full of wonder and enthusiasm for learning. It has been my delight to experience working with this young age group. Anxious to please, these first graders work hard and love to be actively participating throughout instruction time. My goal is to bring enjoyment and smiles to their little faces as we work together to establish a positive foundation and love for learning.

My Project

Children love to have stories read to them. During Guided Reading centers, my students have the opportunity to listen to books on cd. This allows students to follow along as a narrator reads. Hearing the book read and seeing the words come alive on the page can help them to focus on the sounds of words, and make picture and text connections as they study the relationship between the illustrations or photographs, and the words.

Audiobooks increase word exposure, improve vocabulary, and assist struggling readers to move beyond decoding to become more fluent readers.

They also teach critical listening skills. As students listen, they hear expression and can model good interpretive reading. Listening to stories read aloud helps build an understanding of narrative structure as it fosters imagination and encourages visualization—skills linked to improved reading comprehension. And perhaps most importantly, children’s audiobooks have the potential to reinforce the notion that reading is a pleasurable, lifelong activity.
