My Students

My students are very caring and helpful people. They enjoy learning together. Most of them are savvy with technology (chromebooks). They help the others who are learners. 21st century learners is a good description of the class and their dynamics. They absorb information when technology is used while still enjoying and benefitting from live interaction. They say that their favorite times of day are snack time and recess (of course!). But I see them highly engaged in Writing and Reading to Self.

Our school is located in Southeast Portland, Oregon.

It is a Title 1 school where 100% of the students are on the free lunch program.

Each child in my classroom absolutely loves learning, although the method and environment in which they learn best vary greatly. We incorporate a variety of learning strategies, group work, and alternative seating and learning options to ensure that each student's needs are met, right where they are! They are truly an incredible group, and I am so lucky and thankful to have a new group of learners that are excited and ready to learn each year!

My Project

The use of chromebooks is almost a daily activity in my classroom, especially in math, writing, and school-wide programs that help kids increase their toolbox of skills. Included in our curriculum are videos and interactive activities for students to be reminded of the learning targets and mathematical and literary concepts. For other activities in Google classroom, students have the option to speak their text using voice typing. What becomes a problem is the fact that the headsets fall apart easily and are of poor quality. Headsets are necessary to keep computer noise levels down and to allow students to focus on the computer tasks provided. Unfortunately, the headsets never seem to last year by year. When a student cannot access the lesson due to headset issues, they feel disheartened and must use their learning time to go to other classrooms to borrow a pair of headphones. Even though they are great about doing this, it is distracting for many of my students who have focusing issues and they miss important instruction from either myself or the program lesson on the computer. By having reliable headsets for all learners, students will be able to avoid all of these problems and focus on increasing their learning!

By donating to our project, you will not only help to improve and increase student attention and focus, you will ultimately help to increase their academic achievement.

Students will be able to simply focus on the academic material at hand, and not whether their materials are going to work or not. Plus in this technology literate world, any interaction with updated technology will increase their literacy as well as their desire to learn and use the new technology!
