My Students

I teach in a huge urban school district at a Title I school where 100% of the students receive free lunch and breakfast. My school has 762 students from all different backgrounds. In a district that is struggling financially, it is my struggle to make sure my students receive an education that does not reflect the lack of funding that is our reality. We have created a home away from home, a place where learning is fun.

My goal is to start my students on their educational path with the right academic tools that will allow them to be successful in the upcoming years of school.

This is important since for most of my students I am their first experience with school. "Kindergarten is key" is our motto.

My Project

The listening center will be used during the "listen to reading" portion of the literacy block. Students will listen to, and read along with, books on CDs. Listening to audio books allows students to hear stories read with fluency and prosody. English language learners especially benefit from hearing pronunciation, expression, and word use provided by listening to audio books. Many books on tape have interesting sound effects, music, and multiple narrators that are especially motivating and fun for young children.

Providing a listening center to my students will provide them with engaging technology that will allow them to extend their listening comprehension by hearing and reading along with stories that are above their independent and instructional reading levels.
