This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

"Civilization is a race between education and chaos." - H.G. Wells. In our high-need, high-risk community, few children have books or a consciousness the importance of reading. My third grade ESOL students often have no one at home to read to them - or listen to them read - in English. A listening center would provide them with a model of fluent, expressive reading. I read to them every day, but they need much more exposure to make up for the years they have lost.

A third of our third-grade classroom reads at Kindergarten level, many others at first or second grade. We are working with older reading supplies and have no listening center at all. These children are hungry for stories - you should see their faces when I read to them. They will not become accomplished readers without more read-along opportunities and our school can't afford to buy us a listening center.

The listening center I'm requesting would allow a handful of children to read along with a skilled narrator every day during our literacy centers. This tool has been proven to help children improve their reading skills - crucial to preventing them from dropping out before they graduate.

Your generous gift may be the turning point for some of the struggling readers in my class. To say some of them are in dire academic straights would be an understatement.
