Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Students in my classroom strive to become independent learners. To reach this goal, they work in collaborative groups, peer groupings and independently. They are very resourceful and support one another. We are a community of respect and learning.
Our school is in an urban school district.
Currently, it is facing financial challenges as the educational budget was cut. The school district is densely populated. The city has a high poverty rate. The district also has a large racial and ethnic group. It has a large group of immigrant population which English is the second language. My classroom is comprised of 26 students. All come from low social economic status. Many are from single family homes. Some are from homes where parents work two jobs and spending time with them is not an option. Some of the students have disabilities. The majority of the students are performing below grade level in all academic areas. It is a lovely group of students. They bring fun and enthusiasm to the classroom. Many are very energetic and some are very shy. They all want to be successful and make money in the future to help their parents at home.
My Project
The listening center will be used in various ways. Students will listen to whole class reading while following on their textbooks. As whole class, we will discuss the story orally. During reading center, students will listen to stories while tracking on the books. Students will then work in their groups to discuss the text and answer questions in writing. Students will also have the opportunity to work in the center independently. Every lesson will be aligned to our rigorous curriculum. Students will be challenged to learn reading skills to build fluency, comprehension and structure of different literary genres. Students will also read fictional and non-fictional texts. Fictional stories will allow students to understand it's structure. Through non-fictional texts, students will learn about real topics.
Utilizing the listening center will help students build fluency and comprehension.
As the stories are heard, students will track the words. This will assist with the understanding of when to pause and stop. Knowing this helps with building speed and accuracy. Through tracking, students will also develop intonation and expression. Perfecting fluency will help with comprehension. While pausing and stopping as well as, the intonation and expression, students will have the time to understand.
