Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach 1st grade at a fantastic urban school in a working class community. Nearly 100% of the students are on free or reduced lunch and most are English language learners. They are a great group of kids who are always eager to learn new things and share them with everyone they know.

My students love to listen to stories. In fact,story time is the only time of the day when they are completely quiet! They love asking questions about the characters and making connections to their own lives. However, I am only able to read them one or two stories a day.

The old listening center was a great way to get my students excited about reading and was an easy activity for the students to do independently. Sadly, our classroom listening center is broken and is unlikely to get replaced or repaired anytime soon. Everyday the students ask me if I have fixed it and everyday I have to to tell them no. Imagine their surprise and joy if they were to come to school and see a brand new listening center! The listening center I am requesting is portable and has beautiful comfy headphones. It would be a fantastic addition to our classroom.

Our old listening center provided endless hours of reading enjoyment for my students. They enjoyed it so much that they didn't even realize that they were improving their reading fluency and vocabulary! Your generous gift will bring a smile to many little faces and make a teacher very thankful.
