Don't you hate it when the materials that you love and use each and every day stop working the way they should? That's what is happening to the headphones and CD players my students use every day during our literacy stations.
I teach an absolutely AWESOME group of first graders.
There are 12 girls and 12 boys who are diverse in race and socioeconomic backgrounds. They work hard and play hard in everything they do. My small urban Nebraska school struggles to meet the needs of all the students with the limited budget that they receive in these tough economic times. I would love to provide the little 'extras' to my students, to make learning more meaningful and enjoyable.
My Project
My students need eight portable CD players and eight headphones and rechargeable batteries to replaces our broken listening area. My students absolutely love to read and be read to. Each and every day, my students work hard learning to read, write, do math, and learn about their world. They are given opportunities to listen to books on Cd's and play interactive learning games on the computer. The headphones that my students use are very old and do not work properly. Everyday I have several frustrated students tell me that their book is skipping or that the computer is broken, when it is really the headphones not working the way they should. The padding is broken on many and several have only one side that works, or need to have a cord wiggled just to get the sound to be heard. Our CD players also stopped working properly. We often have to let it "rest" or jiggle the buttons just to get it to play.
My students would benefit greatly from new CD and DVD players and headphones and rechargeable batteries.
This would end the frustration experienced by my students due to old technology as they work hard learning to read, write, and learn their math facts.
