This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Many of my students face struggles and challenges in their daily lives, but I see their dedication, and the joy they find in learning is truly inspiring.
We work together to create a learning community where everyone is safe and feels valued.
During their time in my class, I work to show my students the rewards hard work brings, as well as to show them that our unique differences are to be celebrated and respected.
I teach in a Title I school with the majority of students receiving free or reduced price lunch. While our families want their children to be successful, and there is great community support for the schools, I know that many students will not come to school prepared with the necessary supplies. I do my best to ensure that all students have what they need academically, physically, and emotionally during the time they are in my care.
My Project
While my students LOVE reading independently and take pride in reading a book to themselves, they are still in the early stages of literacy development, which means many of their books follow a predictable pattern and are very simple in nature.
I want my students to see how books can bring joy and humor into our lives, how rich the world of reading can be!
This is something they are not getting from their "just right" books. I read aloud each day as part of our balanced literacy instruction, but I would love for my students to have more opportunity to sit back, open up a book, and enjoy a really high quality story.
The listening center from Lakeshore Learning will allow 4 students to listen to a story at the same time, while also keeping materials organized. The book sets from Scholastic will bring in more than 25 books and read aloud CDs. These books include student favorites such as Pete the Cat, There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Bat, If You Give a Moose a Muffin, Click Clack Moo, Duck on a Tractor, The Very Hungry Caterpillar, Corduroy, and Goodnight Moon.
