My Students
My students come from a high-poverty low-income community. They live in the poorest county of New Jersey. Some of my students' parents work two to three jobs to take care of the bare necessities of everyday life. While their parents want the very best for them, the extra things in life may not be able to be provided. About seventy-five percent of my students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch and cannot readily afford materials to help enhance their education.
My students have faced many challenges in their young lives where school tends to be their only constant.
In our first grade classroom, we like to keep things exciting. There are a lot of important skills that my first graders need to master before they are ready for second grade. They love working with each other and learning new things!
My Project
The listening center organizer and headphones will greatly impact my students and their academics. As research-based best practices suggest, following along to stories read-aloud greatly improves students' reading as it models fluency, accuracy, and expression at a steady rate. These components are crucial to engaging students in adventures of texts.
The listening center provides enrichment in a child's multi-sensory experience with books.
Students are exposed to more diversity in literacy centers and listening center allows for more exposure to read alouds. Having a defined and organized space allows students to work independently in their center. Headphones help to maintain a quiet workspace while students are in literacy centers, allowing students to focus on their work independently.
