My students need a listening center! The listening center includes an iPad Mini with a shock-proof case, a five-way split headphone jack, five sets of headphones, and a basket for everything to be easily carried!
I will have a classroom full of eager second graders in just one short month! When those kiddos step into my room, I want to give them opportunities that they may not be given otherwise. We are at a Title I Primary School in a small South Carolina town. My students will have come from various ethnic, economic, and social backgrounds. Some of them will be considered at-risk students because they are below grade level in reading or math. Often, my students do not get to go on summer vacations or big field trips. So, I teach them that they can go anywhere in the world through reading!
A lot of children don't love reading or can't read well, so I want to provide them a space to read through listening.
My Project
After a whole group reading lesson, students will participate in an intervention block. During this block, I will meet with different groups of students. As I meet with groups, the rest of the class will be engaging in literacy centers. The purpose of these centers is for both remediation and enrichment. My goal is to have this Listening Center in place during this intervention block.
Using an iPad Mini in this center will not only give my students the opportunity to listen to books, but it will also give them a chance to utilize technology that our district is not able to provide.
While in the Listening Center, a group of students (five or less) will all listen to the same story using various apps or audio books on the iPad Mini and the set of headphones. Having the five-way split headphone jack makes it easy for a group of students to listen at one time. After listening to the story, they will have some sort of follow-up activity to complete together. This activity will depend on what literary skill the students are learning and practicing that week.
In my experience, "Center Time" is a favorite activity for students. It allows them to experience reading in a less structured setting. They are able to get with other students to work together on activities that they enjoy. I strongly believe that adding this listening center to my rotation during my intervention block will help students improve their reading, listening, and technology skills in a fun way.
