This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students inspire me to be a better teacher. I am a Resource Specialist serving students with special needs in grades K-5. 60% of my students are English Language Learners and 100% of my students come from low socio-economic backgrounds.
Fluency is an essential element of reading, and has a direct link to reading comprehension. My students have below grade level reading fluency, which results in below grade level reading comprehension.
Research has shown that repeated reading is an excellent technique for helping students achieve automaticity (the ability to recognize words instantly). Recording their reading can help students see the benefits of repeated reading.
With a digital voice recorder, the students can record their first reading of a passage and then again after they have practiced the passage a few times. Students can then compare their performance on the two readings, counting their errors and comparing the time it took them to read. I will have them record the rate on a graph so they will have concrete proof of their progress.
I want my students to have an active role in their education. I believe that recording their own readings, analyzing their own errors, and graphing their own results will help them feel a sense of accomplishment when they see how much progress they have made.
Your help will encourage my students to take ownership of their education and to become confident readers. I know they will succeed!
