Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Since I'm teaching kindergarten, this is my students first introduction to what school is all about. I want to introduce my students to a well rounded education including literacy, writing, math, science, social studies and extracurriculars like music and art. I work in a low income school, where resources are limited and I believe that my students especially deserve the right to a positive, well rounded and equitable education. My students are kind, loving and eager to learn. Since these students are so ready to learn new things and challenge themselves, I want to ensure that their educational experience is advocated for.
I believe that play should be an integral part of learning.
Children should be given the opportunity to be able to learn in a fun and positive way. I also want to integrate play into all subjects and then weave together all subjects so we can have a more cohesive and fun flow of the day.
My Project
A listening center in a classroom is imperative for growth in literacy. It gives students a chance to discover new vocabulary, build listening skills and increase critical thinking skills. Through the process of hearing the speaker, understanding what the speaker is saying and making a judgment based on that understanding, students will develop all the necessary skills to become the best readers and listeners. In a listening center, a student is able to focus on the sounds of words read without interruption so the student is able to hear a more fluent reading of a story. The benefits of a listening center are it models fluent reading, helps students decode unfamiliar words, teaches critical listening skills, introduces new vocabulary, provides a read-aloud model, introduces new genres that students might not otherwise consider, and introduces students to books above their reading level.
I have a diverse population of students, who speak various languages and some are multi lingual.
A listening center can help English Language Learners (ELLs) by exposing students to patterns, intonation, expressions, different accents & dialects, and the pronunciation of a language. ELL students are then able to build on their vocabulary, gain prosody, and oral fluency as they make connections to what they hear and see throughout the text. It also helps students connect the sounds of their second language (possibly third, fourth..) with the print on the page.
Additionally a listening center allows students to hear a story multiple times which then the repeated readings have a significant impact on word recognition, fluency and comprehension.
And lastly, in my project there is a new carpet for my classroom! I believe this carpet will be conducive to learning, which we do most of our learning on the carpet. It will help with expectations and partner work!
