My Students

I teach a class of 22 wonderfully curious kindergarteners. They are excited about learning and they are gaining confidence with each new skill.

Our school is made up of over 900 students in grades pre K through 5.

My class is one of seven kindergarten classes at our school. My students have a wide range of abilities and I am working towards acquiring more resources to meet their individual needs.

My Project

Each day, a large part of our morning is devoted to developing reading and writing skills within a small group setting. Working with students in small groups is very beneficial to student learning, but also presents the challenge of keeping independent groups engaged in meaningful activities. With these new listening centers, students who are working independently will be engaged in interactive lessons that build essential phonemic awareness and phonics skills. These lessons will help students to understand the relationship between letters and sounds, which is necessary to decode and spell words. They will also improve a students' ability to hear, identify, and manipulate sounds in spoken words. Knowing the sounds that make up a word will help students to more easily delete, add, or substitute sounds to form new words. These activities will also help students to segment words, blend, rhyme, and more.

Donations to this project will help to provide current and future students with fun and engaging listening activities that develop phonemic awareness and phonics skills needed to read and spell.
