Our library is a K-12 library serving approximately 600 students. The staff is innovative with a strong desire to provide the most effective learning environment available to students.
Our student population consists of a high percentage of low-income families who have very little access to opportunities outside of school and our small town.
One of the great things about our school is that it has a great sense of community, thus our school is a hub for the community.
The library is where students come to discover to find those perfect books to meet their needs. Reading books aloud to students is an important part of the library. Having a great selection of books that will spark interest and bring joy to students is a must.
My Project
Reading aloud is one of the best parts of being a librarian. Students love to listen to books read in an exciting, fun way. After hearing a great story they then want to check out the book and read it to themselves. Having a book that they already heard helps them in recreating the story themselves even if they can't read all of the words...yet.
I have some great lessons planned to go along with all of these books to create more learning in the library.
These lessons will provide writing, STEM, and other important learning activities tied to picture books. One example is pairing fiction books with nonfiction books is a great way for students to learn the difference between the genres. We will read "Bear Snores On" a fiction book about a bear who hibernates and then read the nonfiction book "Why Do Animals Hibernate?" We will then discuss the aspects that make a fiction or nonfiction book.
These books will be a great asset to our library program and I know students will love having fun books to read and fun learning activities to go with the books!
