My students need supplies to listen to audiobooks in order to help them fully understand the book they're reading.

My Students

My students learn differently. They are smart, creative, and hard-working, but need additional support in math and language arts. I teach in a Title I school, where a high percentage of students are on a free and reduced lunch program. My students come from all different walks of life, and a lot of their families are from the working class. Often times, my students come to school and it is the only positive time of their day, where they know they are cared for.

My Project

I teach a small group literacy class, where my students are often multiple grade levels behind in both reading and writing. My students struggle with grade-level reading material, but they are still expected to read and comprehend what is happening in the texts they are reading in their grade-level English/Language Arts classes.

Having my students be able to listen to an audiobook would help them tremendously.

Being able to listen to the book instead of worrying about just getting through a sentence would take a load off of my students' backs. When I read to them, they are much more capable of comprehending and understanding what they are reading. However, many of my students are in multiple different ELA classes, and I cannot read 3 different books at the same time. Therefore, having students work in smaller groups while I help facilitate discussions and answer questions would help my students so much more.

These materials would be tremendously useful in a variety of ways. Different audiobooks could be uploaded to different MP3 players to allow for literature circles. Students can use the headphones and audio splitters in order to participate in literature circles, as well. Having 4 different MP3 players would allow for a large variety of audiobooks and literature circles going on in a classroom at one time, and having 10 sets of headphones would allow for each student to participate.
