My students need science and social studies read alongs like Gail Gibbons Wolves and biographies like Anne Frank to help them understand the world better.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
To give you an idea of my students' attitudes, imagine when something falls on the floor in our classroom. Any students nearby jump up to help clean up the mess right away! They love to help, be class organizers and to notice when someone is being kind.
My first grade students are enthusiastic and motivated about important issues when they can see, read and research these interests.
Having up-to-date, interesting social/science studies texts will help my students to become self-motivators who can guide their own learning by the end of the year.
My students attend a high-needs public school in Baltimore MD. We are a close knit community and most students have brothers, sisters and cousins who also attend as well. Students are very motivated by science experiments, writing projects and animal research. Many of them love to help in the classroom, but need structure to help them succeed.
My Project
My students will be using these materials to learn how to research, develop understanding about social issues and nature facts. Often, their reading level limits their ability to research independently. Read alongs (books with CDs) will give them the independence they need to understand the world better.
Many of my students have a special need to develop critical thinking and communication skills.
They need to develop their ability to form a idea, research their thoughts, correct any misconceptions and then create something that shows what they learned and what they want to share. This is not easy because many of my students face situations that make this process more difficult to develop. Having interesting, grade appropriate materials will challenge students begin this process!
