My students need headphones and a headphone splitter to use for our classroom listening center. This builds English Language Learner's vocabulary and increases fluency.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As part of our Literacy block students engage in various reading and writing activities. Every day students will benefit from having a classroom listening center. I have many books on tape but unfortunately I have no headphones on which to play these books.
I teach first grade SEI (students who do not speak English as their first language) in one of the poorest sections of Boston.
Although I read to my class many students do not have parents who are able to read to them each night. Because of this, most of my students are not consistently exposed to the rich vocabulary found in many books and are missing out on the experience of being read to. If I can create a classroom listening center then my students can listen to books and new vocabulary, hear fluent English and be exposed to different literary genres. This listening center will help to build a strong foundation in literacy that will benefit my students for years to come.
My Project
Students will use the listening center daily to listen to books and then complete comprehension activities in small groups. This will be an independent activity for students to complete. First grade students love the experience of being read to and this center will allow students to work on listening skills, an important part of learning a new language. This is an excellent resource for my many English Learners and allows students to have fun while learning.
I recognize the benefit of having my parents read to me nightly as I grew up and I want my students to be afforded this same benefit.
I understand that many parents are unable to read to their children nightly and I hope that a classroom listening center can offer a chance for my students to learn some of those skills. I want my students to have the same opportunities as every other child.
