Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach preschool students whose primary language is not English. Most of them don’t have the opportunity to interact and be exposed to different book genres. They have difficulty communicating their basic needs because they lack oral skills and vocabulary. Despite their disadvantage, they always come to school happy and eager to learn and explore different activities during the day. They love to listen to stories because it opens a window to new things and the world.
I feel that providing students with an opportunity to listen to stories many times can help to develop their oral language, new vocabulary, listening skills, and appreciation for reading.
The positive effects a listening center has on a child will affect his whole reading life from then on. The students will eventually be able to communicate and gain good comprehension skills that will promote lifelong readers.
My Project
These books will open a window of opportunities for my students to enhance their listening, speaking and comprehension skills while learning English. The listening center is part of the daily activities where the students practice their pre-reading skills and pretend reading by listening to new words and proper intonation. It will lend into more literacy skills by promoting students to speak via acting out the different roles and other art related activities the students are encouraged to follow up after reading. Children learn a new language naturally by listening to adults talk and imitate them. The listening center will have the same effect because the students will hear and eventually speak the new language once they feel comfortable.
