Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

In this age of technology, students can pick up a cell phone or a tablet and use it like a pro. For the most part, my students do not have access to technology at home and have limited access at school. They yearn to have access to these tools at school to learn each day.

My students live and learn in a suburb of a large city where 90% receive free or reduced lunch.

Our school is a dual language school where students are learning both English and Spanish and they need access to materials in both languages. We offer language clubs and computer classes as well as art and homework help after school. Our students love to learn and our families do their best to support their students.

My Project

Our school purchased three computer based programs to help our students learn, St math, Lexia, and Myon. One math, one English, and one Spanish focused reading program license. Both of the reading programs require headphones to access. Three years ago, generous donors purchased headphones for my classroom that were used by 4 classrooms. There are no longer enough working headphones for a class to use. These more substantial headphones will allow an entire classroom to access the computers at one time. When shared by two or three classes, we can have more students accessing online learning at one time.

My students love technology and feel so accomplished when they use the computer.

They love to help each other and they love to explore. When there are not enough headphones, student choices are limited. These choices empower my students and help them feel more in control of their learning. Choices also allow me to target each child's individual needs without calling out a child's learning level.
