This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My two classes consist of 64 second graders who are learning in a dual language setting. Half of them spend the morning with me to learn in English and the afternoon with my partner to learn in Spanish. My students come from a variety of backgrounds. About 50% of our students come form socio-economically disadvantaged homes. Regardless of where my students live, they love school and come ready and eager to learn. They work hard, try their best, and have fun while doing it! Not only are my students learning 2nd grade curriculum, but they are also becoming global, bilingual, bicultural, and biliterate citizens.

My Project

Headphones are used daily in our classroom during small group reading and math instruction and to support individualized learning, in English and Spanish, through the use of technology. Right now, some students use their own personal headphones (when they remember to bring them) and some use the few class headphones that we have left. However, we currently do not have enough headphones for all 32 students to use at once. Out of the headphones left for classroom use, the majority are not working properly.

Chaos! It is imperative that students have their own set of headphones to use in order to clearly focus on their individual learning needs during math and literacy blocks. Students will be able to concentrate on their own work and progress without being preoccupied with their classmates' work.

If funded, the headphones will be used with two classes for a total of 64 students per day! I believe that these headphones will allow students to reach their learning potential by helping aide their focus.
