Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I will be a fourth grade teacher in a mixed classroom (English language learners and Regular students) during the 2006-2007 school year. These students need to improve their reading comprehension and fluency. Listening libraries are helpful for students to achieve higher scores on national tests. It also helps tremendously with their reading comprehension. For this purpose, I am asking for blank cassette tapes. When students read into the tapes they will be able to hear themselves and monitor their progress and fluency. Moreover, students will find out how fun learning can be by making their own tapes! Another project will allow students to bring in their favorite book and read it into the tape. They will give the reasons why they chose this book, and I will play the tapes to the class, as if it were a radio show! I will have about 30 students so I will need at least 30 blank tapes!English Language Learners need the confidence to improve their speaking and reading because they are learning a new language.
In addition, I am also asking for post-it notes. Students will use post-its to mark vocabulary, questions or thoughts they may have about a particular section in the text. This is known as thinking-aloud. This also teaches students to write down their thinking and make connections with the text.
The colors/crayons/markers will be used throughout the year to represent their ideas about the text and characters. This will teach them to visualize their thinking. I am very excited about the upcoming school year.
