My Students

Our school maintains 20 classrooms that serve over 700 at-risk preschool age children and their families on a daily basis. At-risk means that through a developmental screening process a child was found to have one or more characteristics that may adversely impact their readiness for kindergarten and further school success. One of these at risk factors is low income and the majority of our school population is low income. Although the majority of our families are low-income we represent all socio-economic levels. Our school is a multicultural school with the diversity of 24 languages represented by our families.

"It's all good" in our Pre-K world.

This is a common phrase heard in our PreK classroom. This comes from the students' favorite storybook character, Pete the Cat. Often times students will ask to listen to Pete the Cat on CD during discovery time.

My Project

My students need a listening center in our classroom so they can listen to their favorite books on tape. This comfy corner listening center and headphones will allow for our preschool students to listen to stories on CD which is a critical component in developing their comprehension skills. Our students tend to be more engaged and on task when they have the opportunity to choose their own story.

Listening is a very important part of learning.

Being able to have a comfortable area to enjoy their favorite stories will enhance their listening and comprehension skills. Having a quiet environment to listen to favorite stories will greatly benefit our students' learning.
