My Students

Our students are AWESOME! They are unique, creative, and talented. They come from all walks of life. We have a wonderful school and are surrounded by supportive parents and family members. Our school operates just like a community. We provide for our students emotionally, mentally, physically and educationally. The well-being of our students is our top priority.

WMES thrives on teaching the WHOLE child.

Not only do we focus on reading and math, but we also strive to teach our students science, social studies, and the arts. We are a school that is dedicated to creating 21st century learners. We can only do this if we have updated materials and resources.

Our school has approximately 475 students. We have four self-contained special needs classes, as well as one preschool class. Our teachers all have diverse backgrounds and exhibit a variety of teaching styles. Our teachers do a wonderful job of differentiating for our students.

My Project

Students in kindergarten and first grade learn how to read by reading to others, reading to themselves and being read to. Interactive read alouds help students do better with fluency and comprehension.

According to research, children's listening comprehension outpaces their reading comprehension, especially during the elementary years.

Therefore, we need to make sure we are providing as much read aloud time to students as possible. With testing and assessments becoming more and more prevalent in kindergarten and first grade it is often hard to read aloud to students more than one time a day.

This is where having a good, reliable listening center can come into play! By having a sufficient listening center with a variety of materials, students will be able to listen to books read aloud independently. The materials I have chosen for the listening center include CDs with recordings of popular children's books. I have chosen picture books and CDs that the students are familiar with and can read along with easily.

Students will be able to pick a story, listen to it and read along with a copy of the book, as well. Each student will have the opportunity throughout the week to visit the listening center and listen/read books at least 2-3 times a week.
