My students... are funny, kind, exasperating, hardworking, demanding, serious, silly, and... their eyes light up when I put a book in their hands that they were eagerly anticipating. Almost all 600 of my K-5 students are voracious readers, and it is all I can do to "feed" their appetite every week.
My students are what make my job worthwhile.
Students are welcome in the library at any time of day, and our library has become the "safe space" for many. My students know that my #1 goal is for them to become life-long readers and that I will do everything I can to help them find the books they can fall in love with.
My Project
The students at my school are voracious readers, and for the past three years I have worked extensively to make our library collection more current and more relevant to their interests and their studies. This year, my focus is on improving and expanding our selection of books on wild animals by adding different types of animals and different reading levels.
We have several grades that do animal reports, often looking for book sources to complement the entries in our PebbleGo database.
We don't always have the animals kids are most excited to write about or enough copies or versions of the animals we do have. While our library could use animal books of all types, I have chosen to focus this project on wild cats, dogs, and bears - a popular section for the students.
When classes come into the library, most students make a beeline to the shelves where their favorite books are. I know our animal enthusiasts would be thrilled to find new, fresh selections on their favorite animals and also to find new types of animals available for them pour over.
