My Project
Block printing can be traced back to 2nd C. East Asia, where artisans would carve into blocks of wood, apply ink, and print them on silk. A few hundred years later, blocks were engraved to transcribe religious works, calendars, and texts. Fast forward to the 17th century, Ukiyo-e artists boldly communicated the beliefs and interests of the Japanese people, and unknowingly, would inspire the Impressionist painters of 19th C. Western Europe.
Etching into linoleum blocks is the type of project that motivates students to be bold, take necessary risks, struggle and persevere, and propel their introspective pursuits.
For example, the immediacy and intimacy of the carving process, expressiveness of the line, control of positive and negative space, and uniqueness of the final product would surely delight my students to their core. I would be incredibly grateful if you could help afford them the opportunity to experiment with this historic medium.
