My students are curious, capable 5th graders, just at the age where they are asking thoughtful questions about historical events, current news, and new knowledge in general. They enjoy working together with peers, sharing their ideas and helping each other. They are willing to learn and have so much potential to develop their skills and knowledge this year.
Many of my students come from immigrant families, making our classroom a culturally rich environment, while also presenting the challenge of English being students' second language.
Many students speak and understand English well in daily conversation, but find understanding academic reading challenging. Even for students who speak English at home, building academic vocabulary is a high priority to help them navigate all subject areas.
Developing grade level language skills is a goal for my students this year! Please consider supporting my students in building solid language skills!
My Project
Books for our classroom library will allow for individual students to practice reading at their current reading level. As a teacher still building my classroom library, it would greatly benefit my students, especially those who are not currently reading on grade level, to have books suited for their learning needs.
In addition, a Scholastic News subscription for each student will provide engaging reading material about real life events.
Students enjoy reading these articles about current events, and while doing so they practice grade level academic vocabulary and reading comprehension. They will also discuss these real- world issues, allowing for critical thinking and sharing of opinions!
Lastly, supplies such as an extra wide pocket chart, markers, tape, and post- its are all part of the G.L.A.D (Guided Language Acquisition Design) model, which is an excellent structure for teaching language acquisition. It involves students practicing using academic language in groups, receiving instruction close up to the teacher through teacher- made posters, and using motions and chants to learn language and information. These miscellaneous supplies enable the teaching and student participation in groups.
