Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

Hello. I am a teacher at D.F. Huddle Elementary school at Alexandria, Louisiana. The project that I want funded deals with literature in the classroom. The school in which I teach is in dire need of books. We need a set of literature books that our third grade students can read together as a class. Reading is a weak point at our school as most of our students are economically disadvantaged and do not have easy access to books. We desperately need books that students can read as a class with each student having his/her own book to read from as instruction is taking place. I would like to plan a group reading activity for the Fall in which the whole third grade could actively participate in a reading project that would be of cultural interest. The school is 99 percent African-American with some of our students coming from the recently affected New Orleans region. We currently have (4) third grade classrooms with (22) students in each class for a total population of (88)students. I believe this project will make a great impact on the students at D.F. Huddle and will help them gain confidence in their reading ability as well as knowledge of basic reading skills.
