Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are moderate to severe nonverbal special education preschool students who have autism spectrum disorder. They come from a variety of socioeconomic backgrounds, but primarily low. The only way to engage these students is to modify materials in order to meet their individual needs, especially sensory needs. They utilize VODs (Vocal Output Devices), picture icons, communication boards, gestures, signs, and eye gaze to express their wants, needs, and opinions. I love being creative and helping them become more interactive with objects, toys, and books.
My Project
One of the most effective strategies to build a child’s language skills is through literacy. I am hoping that you will help me expand my library so that I can expand the language abilities of my nonverbal preschool students.
Reading stories to children and developing correlating activities provides opportunities for flexible thinking, creative exploration and social interactions.
When children are provided developmentally appropriate books, pre-linguistic skills of joint attention and turn taking will increase, which will build the foundation for overall vocabulary to also increase. Preschool students are also naturally drawn to colorful books with rhythmic text that foster language growth.
