Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
LINCOLN HERMANOS MENTORS, INC.- WHERE DEDICATED LATINO HIGH SCHOOL BOYS MENTOR AT-RISK LATINO ELEMENTARY BOYS. As well as teaching fourth grade at this Title I school, I also pair successful high school boys with underachieving elementary boys from grades 2 through 5. What ensues is a learning relationship that has proven to raise grades and lower behavior citations. The older mentors are given college scholarships via fundraisers, private donors and service organizations. I have requested college-bound dictionaries for the mentors to use with their little buddies. Each year the mentors can take the dictionaries with them to college. A useful momento of precious time spent changing a child's life forever.
Many of our students are caught between two worlds- the fast-paced American culture and the traditional Mexican culture where hard work is the only path to success. Many of our students come from homes where their parents were never allowed an education in Mexico; therefore, they cannot provide the educational assistance the older mentors can. Because of the older boys' dedication, the younger boys and their families are transformed by hope.
Ideally, we need financial support to fund college scholarships for the older mentors. However, any gifts that can be used for learning will benefit all the boys- especially the dictionaries that I am requesting within this project. These dictionaries will be used within the program and afterward by the mentors for college. When the older boys know they are getting rewarded with stipends to help them with college costs, they are even more committed to devote their time and attention to the younger boys. The younger boys receive the best situation for learning: one-on-one mentoring from positive role-models they want to emulate. It is a win-win program for all where miracles do happen.
As I tell all of my students, "An education is the only way to a meaningful and successful life. I know because I was raised in a family that couldn't pay for my education. I worked hard to put myself through school so I could make magic as a teacher. For 30 years, I have changed lives." I implore all of you donors to help change lives with your donations.
