Limit 1st-Grade Books to 9 Inches in Height? Heck, No!

Help me give my students 2 sturdy bookcases with 12" shelves that accommodate taller/picture books!

My Project

Did you know that the standard dimensions for children's picture books are a seemingly harmless six and three-quarter inches wide by nine and one-quarter inches tall? Of course not! Who would know that? Yet, tragically, these numbers are now burned into my brain, thanks to two well-loved, but functional (or so I thought) bookcases that I found living in our First Grade Classroom late last August. "Great!" I declared upon first glance. "These will help make a cozy reading nook!" Little did I know, these old beauties harbored a dark secret—one so sinister, so diabolical, that no First Grader should ever be subjected to it. The shelves...? Only. Nine. Inches. Tall. NON-ADJUSTABLE. And to add insult to injury, the already-meager height was reduced by another three-quarters of an inch by cursed under-shelf braces! How these anti-picture-book apparatuses infiltrated Room 101 will forever be a mystery. But the immediate implications were grim. These “bookcases,” with their pitiful 8-inch clearance, were, in fact, Picture Book Torture Chambers. Beloved hardcover classics like Go, Dog, Go!, Hop on Pop, and anything by Mo Willems had no chance of survival here. Giving up and laying down, piling miserably on top of one another, was their only option.

This is why we desperately need proper early-elementary bookcases, with a humane, picture-book-friendly shelf height of at least 11 inches, where ALL our beloved books can finally stand tall and proud, side by side in harmony—ready for the eager hands of First Graders for years to come.

(Perhaps there’s a classroom with older kids, reading short, flimsy paperbacks, that could give the torture-cases a second chance? Maybe, in its benevolence, the District has a Procedure, for exchanging still-useful furniture, equipment and materials with other schools!? But that’s a tale for another time....)
