Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students from Austin, TX are part of the afterschool program at our school. This program provides afterschool care as well as academic assistance, enrichment, college and career readiness, and family engagement activities for at risk youth free of charge to families. My students are creative and full of energy and love being engaged in hands-on, engaging projects and challenges. They mostly love being introduced to new activities and experiences.

Opportunities aren't always readily available to these students but they approach every opportunity given to them with gratitude and excitement.

Our school is a Title 1 school with 95 percent of the population being economically disadvantaged and 78 percent English Language Learners. Even though this is a factor of their circumstance they don't let it affect their outcomes. They grasp everything given to them with eagerness and positivity.

My Project

We pride having youth voice and choice in our program. Similar to a college experience, our students get to create their own afterschool schedules as they choose what activities they participate in each week. One of the components they get to choose from is college and career readiness where we offer a number of entrepreneurship classes such as Little Doctors, Lemonade Stand, Robotics, and When I Grow Up. As students learn lessons on branding, marketing, and advertising, these activities require the students to break into teams and create a name, a logo, and a slogan for their businesses. At our End of Year showcase next school year, the students will get to set up their businesses and display the products they have worked on all school year for their families, friends, and school community to see. By having this Cricut machine, the students will be able to bring their brands to life by being able to print and label their products. They can make labels for their packages, logos for their cards, business shirts and more! This also introduces them to several types of careers in design.
