I teach sixth grade Science and Social Studies at a school that is about 40 miles north of New Orleans. Due to Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, many students from New Orleans have moved into our parish and attend our school; in fact, I teach several of these students. Our schools and parish are undergoing significant growth. Due to the sudden growth of our school, my class is currently housed in a makeshift classroom located in a gym along with two other classes. We are waiting for temporary buildings to be constructed. I am in need of a SMART Board. At this time, I use an overhead projector to project information on to a painted wall for the students to view. Many of the students that I teach do not have a home computer, thus limiting the amount of research that they can do. Due to the content of the subjects that I teach, a SMART Board would allow me to project research up on a board while interacting with the students. It would also allow me unlimited teaching opportunities to teach them how to use the Internet while researching projects for Science and Social Studies. We are currently working on ionic and covalent bonding. There are several websites that allow students to view an actual bonding of elements and to interact with them. This would be a prime example of the value a SMART Board would provide for my students. All of my students would be able to learn more about Science and Social Studies and how these subjects apply to our world beyond their textbooks. I think this will help them to better connect to a world that some displaced students no longer feel connected to.
