My students need books in Spanish so that they may use their native language to read at a higher level while they learn to read in English.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are native Spanish speakers who are learning to read in English.
Studies show that the best results occur when immigrants work at grade level in their native language while learning their adopted language.
In my classroom a portion of the day is spent in Spanish and a portion in English. However, our classroom library is in need of books in Spanish.
My Project
These books will be used for free reading time, and for reference materials when researching a topic. Students' knowledge translates into their adopted language when their English proficiency reaches their age level. This method allows them to build on skills they already have rather waiting for their new language proficiency to catch up.
My students will have books in both English and Spanish to access all of their base knowledge rather than relying solely on books in English.
The library will cover a broad number of topics in order to reach the students' interests and expand their understanding.
