My Students
Do you remember as fondly as I do, the incredible feeling of putting on a show in high school? That feeling of working together toward a common goal? The hard work, the anticipation, the pain, and the ultimate thrill of walking on the stage to finally perform for a live audience? I remember those days, and now as a teacher in the heart of the San Francisco Bay Area, I have the pleasure of leading a group of high school students, helping these passionate, creative and hard working thespians make their dream of bringing live theatre to our community a reality.
For many of my students, this is their first time on stage, and it has hooked them for life: They have found their home.
I love working with these students. They may be in high school, but they work like they are on Broadway, striving to make each show as professional as it can be!
My Project
Our theatre arts program is made up of ready, willing, and very able students, but these dedicated thespians are working with very outdated tech in our theatre classroom, which also doubles as our stage. The space itself is a very nice, 56 seat little theatre - great for small intimate plays. But for years now, we have been working with very rudimentary lighting. The lights are operated by the breakers backstage. The lighting design is pretty much on or off, differentiation being which of the three breakers are either on or off during a scene. Light cues are sometimes someone banging on a part of the set to signal the lighting tech to change the cue. This has provided us with a lot of amusement, but as you can well imagine, not a lot of subtlety. But we love that small space, and the show must go on. So make do we do!
My burgeoning actors deserve better than what amounts to garage lights for their performances, and your helping us with this project will enable us to create the technical subtlety worthy of what the actors are doing onstage.
The products that I have selected will enable our company to not only improve the quality of our performances, but will give me the ability to actually teach the students about lighting design, and the aspects of technical theatre that go with it. We will actually be able to have a lighting crew responsible for creating the design, who will then be able to see their vision bring the show to life onstage. It will take our program to a new level.
