I am a science teacher serving kindergarten through fifth-grade students at PS 272. Approximately 95 percent of our students are eligible for free lunch. My students are eager to learn about the world around them. I would like to do a project on understanding the basic concepts of electricity. Students in grades two through five could all participate in this project. I am asking for funding to purchase materials for studying electricity, such as a small hand generator, test leads, wire strippers, small light bulbs and sockets, a bucket of batteries and fifteen of something really fun called an energy ball -- a ball with metal strips on each side that lights up when held between two fingers which completes the electrical circuit. The students participating in this project will explore the use of electricity in their homes, schools and communities. They will construct series and parallel circuits, explore energy transfer, flow of electricity, and electrical producers and receivers. The students will learn about basic physics and, I hope, will have a fun time doing all this learning. Utilizing the hands on approach will make it easier for the students to actually see what we are studying and remember it for the future. Having these materials will really help me focus my students' attention on the fascinating world of electricity. Thank you.
