Your generous donation will be used to purchase 30 "Ramona the Brave" chapter books, and the related homework packet for my second grade classroom. Chapter books offer exposure to authentic literature, where the language and plot of the story is interesting, meaningful, and serves as a motivating force in children becoming lifelong readers. It is not a mere decoding of dull text usually found in the basal series in most primary classrooms. Students are able to relate to the main character's emotions and experiences. It allows for deeper conversations about the text, it encourages higher order thinking skills as students are actively engaged in group and partner discussions, and in creating posters and dioramas of their favorite chapters. The rich text allows for activities to promote vocabulary development, comprehension, summarizing, main idea identification, and sequencing skills. As a culminating activity, students will work in cooperative groups to plan, direct, and perform a play highlighting their favorite chapters from Ramona the Brave. Costumes, props, and background scenery will be used to make the story come alive. Through role-play students delve deeper into the text and develop a greater understanding of the story events and the main character's emotions. These experiences are important for primary aged children coming from low-income bilingual homes that may not have the resources, reading models, or a literacy rich environment to encourage reading and the sheer enjoyment of a good book.
