Lights! Cameras! Action-Packed Video Journalism Equipment!
Help me give my students the cameras and other tools they need to create a high-quality newscast. More hands-on time for more students can only happen with more technology to go around!
Intelligent, entertaining, eccentric: the students in video journalism are all these things and more! They are passionate about helping create a sense of identity in the school by crafting newscasts that air during the school day every two weeks. Our small program in a small high school in a small town in rural Arkansas has a correspondingly small budget, but large technology needs.
Students in my journalism class are regularly producing, editing, and presenting professional-grade video content that, prior to this class, they never dreamt of creating.
The class allows students to select topics of interest to turn into stories for each newscast, make creative decisions about style and tone, learn to polish and perfect the video through editing software, present their work in a real-world setting through broadcasts, and hear meaningful feedback from the student body. It is a truly unique opportunity for student leadership and creative productivity, and the students in this course do everything they can to meet the challenge with energy, humor, and high standards for themselves!
My Project
It is my desire to provide students with a well-rounded experience in journalism, and that includes off-screen tasks like lighting and audio management just as much as it includes elements that make it onscreen. I want to teach students that quality is just as important as content, that how they say things is just as important as what they say.
This project includes an array of technical equipment which would allow the students to step up their game and create a newscast with a level of polish which glows with professional quality that reflects students' efforts.
The items in this DonorsChoose project would enable students to produce truly high-quality newscasts. While we are well-equipped for filming inside the classroom, a small stabilized handheld camera like the DJI Osimo would allow us to capture high-quality footage on the run in any setting. A high-quality light kit would allow students to record in the studio and have precise control over the studio environment. A new lens with a lower f-stop would enable students to film more artistic and aesthetically pleasing compositions. Each item on this list would enable our video production to improve and prepare us to film in any scenario.
