This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
We are an inner city school in Los Angeles. Our students are from various backgrounds and socioeconomic statuses. Many of our students are English Language Learners (ELL) with roots in Latin America. The neighborhood is currently gentrifying, so we are developing a diverse population with many types of needs.
We are a STEM Magnet that caters to unique and motivated students in Los Angeles.
Our children love to learn and constantly challenge us to meet their unique needs and ignite their passion for learning.
The school is 100 years old and we have multiple generations of students who have attended the school. Although the neighborhood is changing, many of the families remain the same.
My Project
This school year, we will be starting our learning safely from our homes. Lessons and discussions will be held through our computer screens. Students will connect with me daily for live instruction through my small teaching studio in my garage.
Bright lighting for my teaching studio is necessary so students get a clear image of me during instruction and remain engaged in the lessons.
The clips will be used to stretch out my green screen for an optimal image.
Students will be able to make a meaningful connection with me when they can clearly see my expressions of joy and attentiveness. Forming relationships and trust will be easier when students feel a human connection to their teacher.
During math lessons, students will be able to clearly see my hand gestures used for skip counting. Students will be able to see manipulatives used for mathematical operations. During phonics and decoding, students will be able to see my mouth for correct letter sound and word formations. In the primary grades, we emphasize correct formation of sounds produced my the mouth, teeth, tongue, and throat. Students need to see my face clearly in order to mimic correct letter-sound formations.
