Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The digital divide...hard to cross without digital tools. I work at an inner city school in Los Angeles with a focus on Science, Math and Technology. Our families send their children to our school hoping to give them a chance to learn 21st century skills, and we need the technology to teach them.

My students are very dedicated to learning and their community.

Many of the families are immigrants and all the families are working hard so that their children may have a better life and access to higher education. Many of the parents come in for workshops and classes, and they are learning alongside with their children. In our class we have four computers. I have seen them grow in their skills. They are beginning to type, create power points and navigate the Internet. In order to take them to the next level of creating their own content they need tools like digital cameras and camcorders.

My Project

With these cameras the students will be able to document their learning. One of the first projects we have planned in a scientific study of a local wetland. On their visit their will be able to take pictures of the plants and videos of the wildlife at the sight . With the flip cameras they will also be able to interview experts at the sight. In the end they will be able to put this all together to create a mini-documentary discussing their findings about the environmental conditions there. Through all of this the students will learn to master the use of the camera as well as how to utilize these images in a powerful way, and witness how they can influence an audience, for the good of the environment, of course. I would love for the students to use these tools in their everyday learning. They can use them in various literacy and social studies projects. They will use them to create a video biography about themselves, and they will make it a habit to interview each other.

Through all of this the students will learn to master the use of the camera as well as how to utilize these images in a powerful way, and witness how they can influence an audience, for good of course.

What is important about this project is that these students have access to tools they will need to know how to use to be competent 21st century learners. Your donation to this project will give them a chance to learn skills they need to make the leap across that infamous divide.
