Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My students will FLIP when they watch themselves reading, performing, and growing into second graders. I am a first grade teacher in a Title I FOCUS school in North Carolina. I have a very high population of limited English speakers in my class.

Students do not see the magnitude of their own growth until they watch themselves throughout the year. It's no secret that my kids love to read, whether it be books during AR time in the morning, decodable books during our literacy block, or reader's theatre during workshop. However, my students sometimes lack the confidence they should have as readers because they haven't seen how much they have already grown. It is important for students to hear and watch themselves read or perform to see the mistakes they are making and to instill confidence in their reading abilities.

A Flip Video Camera would be such an asset to have in my classroom. I would be able to video tape student's performances, such as reader's theatre and fluency passages, guided reading groups to view the gaps in comprehension skills, and the individual reading of decodable books, so students can see their sound-spelling mistakes. This camera would also be an asset to me for professional development reasons. I could use it to video tape our class to see where learning is breaking down during lessons, watch student's behavior to change my management system, and to see how engaging I am as a teacher. I can't wait to see the growth of my students after they watch themselves read and perform books at their level.

Your generous donation will help my class achieve its big goal of growing 1.5 years in reading and reading 2,010 books by the end of the school year. The Flip Video Camera will excite reading for my students and provide feedback to help them grow.
