My Students

Have you ever tried reading WITHOUT having access to books? How about writing down your thoughts WITHOUT pen and paper? What about riding a bicycle with NO wheels? Well, that is the type of hurdles that I am trying to help my students overcome in our music classroom. And we could use YOUR help!

As the Elementary Music Teacher in a public school with a population of approximately 575 high-poverty students in the City of Richmond, I find that my hands and my lessons are tied directly to the type of materials I have available to me on any given day.

Our students are active thinkers, and I want to be able to capitalize on their inquiring minds by being able to show and share printed music, show videos of musical performances and encourage them to be explorers of all forms of music!

My Project

With the document camera, I would be able to capture images of printed sheet music, music books and other printables and share them with all of my students simultaneously. These images would be shown through the projector onto the pull-down screen in my classroom. Our 3rd Grade Recorder Students, 4th and 5th Grade Choir Students and 4th and 5th Grade Harp Students would be using the document camera and projector system daily to analyze the music they are learning and have the ability to collectively focus on becoming more knowledgeable of their instrument. Combined with my personal laptop computer, I would use the projector to access videos and recordings of orchestra, ballet, and choral performances that would allow my students to fully expand their knowledge of the forms of music that we study in class. When money for field trips is not available, we can experience the opera, the orchestra, or the ballet through video recordings shown in the classroom through the projector

There are all types of technology that enable us to access music and other art forms.

Unfortunately, due to limited funding for music materials in our budget, access to this technology is severely limited in my school's community. This lack of access to technology is one hurdle that I hope to help my students overcome. I want to be able to incorporate the everyday use of technology in my music classroom and model its use for my students.
