My Students

"I hear and I forget, I see and I remember, I do and I understand." This quote by Confucius is the driving momentum behind helping my students put the "boring" history class in the past.

My students are craving to have an engaging social studies classroom.

A classroom in which students become the teachers, collaborators, historians, social activists, and problem solvers. However, my students are in high poverty and do not always have the resources available to them to pursue that desired path. I would like to create a classroom in which traditional social studies videos are kept in the vault and a room in which my students become the leaders by making their own videos and broadcasts. My classroom follows the "flipped classroom" model in which my students watch delivered content in the form of videos at night, while participating in higher level thinking skills and activities during class time. I would like to take this one step further and to allow my students to have their own student-led flipped classroom. This green screen and accompanying accessories will allow my students to create videos in an authentic and real manner.

My Project

Imagine a social studies classroom where you do not know where the front of the room is, students are moving around, technology is in their hands, and everyone seems engaged. Through your donation, our classroom can look just like that. We currently have iPads in the classroom but in order to make authentic videos, we need additional resources. My students need a green screen and lighting tools in order to produce creative social studies videos with their iPads. Having a student project an image on the green screen of the great Egyptian pyramids when they are making an infomercial, or a map of a battle while they are creating a broadcast or a YouTube video is much more effective for the students and the learners than if they were sitting at their desks. Not only will these tools assist with our learning, but we hope to spread these videos to others outside our four walls.
