Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We began the year by writing "I am from" poems, and my students got a glimpse of the power of their own voices. Now we need a camera to celebrate their writing and record it so that it can be shared with others in a school-wide poetry slam.

I teach 160 8th graders at an at-risk, low-income school in Nevada.

My students are bright and creative, but many of them have never been truly challenged to confront their own potential and see how what they're learning actually applies to their own lives.

My Project

My students are beginning a unit on the Holocaust, and they'll be writing a lot of poetry and journal articles in order to attempt to place themselves in others' shoes and grapple with the complex issues people were dealing with at the time. A camera will help us celebrate their writing, and allow us to facilitate a school-wide poetry slam without having to pull students from important core classes. My students thrive on competition, and this poetry slam will help them view writing talent as something to strive for and respect in others. I'll also be able to edit these videos, share them with my classes next year and beyond, and film other important presentations.

Each and every one of my 160 students will see that their thoughts, their words, are powerful and worth preserving.

They will begin to see that strong writers are people to be respected, and learning is something to aspire to. Beyond this year, this project will affect every future class that I teach, because I will show them videos from previous years and encourage them to improve even further.
