Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My classroom is a dual-language classroom in a Title I school district. This means my students all come from Spanish-speaking homes, and most of them come from poverty. My students are trying to learn all the objectives that the state requires them to learn at the same time that they are trying to learn a new language.
My school district was devastated during Harvey, and just two days ago was again affected by tropical depression Imelda.
Our students and parents have gone through a lot in the last few years! My students' parents want to help their children do good in school, but many don't know how. This project will give both parents and students a chance to work together towards achieving the students' goals and give the students a love for reading that will carry on throughout their school years.
My Project
This summer I attended professional development at Rice University. We learned how essential oral language skills are for PreK students. Developing those skills helps develop many other skills like comprehension, social and emotional skills as well as literacy and math skills. They showed us how we can make oral language skills increase by having the students act out the stories we read. That also increases comprehension skills.
By allowing my students to take home these story baskets with books in their language and props for all the characters, the students will be able to work with their families re-enacting the stories (which is a PreK guideline in the state of Texas) and taking turns with them to be different characters.
I will ask the families to make videos of the whole family re-enacting these stories and play the videos for the whole class! This will motivate my students to put on their best performance for the other students.
My students will take turns taking different story baskets home for a week in order to give the parents time to make the videos.
Acting out these stories will help my students develop oral language and other skills that are essential at this age. It will also bring the families together in a fun, new way!
