Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

could be the next Ken Burns! I want to challenge my students to connect with their communities and neighborhoods by documenting their surroundings with short videos.

My students are third graders at a low-income, inner-city school.

Most do not have access to technology at home, and with California's drastic budget cuts our school has very limited resources to bring technology to them. What better way to motivate them then by giving them their own video camera for a day to document their experiences.

My Project

Our school is currently in the process of applying to be an International Baccalaureate school with an emphasis on inquiry-based projects. With these video cameras my students will be able to truly connect with their own communities and share these experiences with their classmates and the rest of the school. My students will learn and practice interviewing skills, how to tell a story, and how to operate a simple video camera. But the most valuable experience might be taking the time to notice and document the small things that make up their daily life experience. How do you get to school? Do you pass the same neighbor or store owner every day and have you ever stopped to talk to them? Where do you go after school and what do you do? Ideally, these stories will be edited together for a finished product to share with the whole school so that we can all learn about and engage in our shared community.

Help my students discover their own communities and those of their classmates by supporting this video project.

It's not always about how many computers you have in the schools, it's about using technology in the best way possible to support the curriculum. These cameras are easy to use, they have many applications beyond this particular project, and most importantly they will motivate students to learn a wide variety of language arts skills.
