My Students

Scene 2, Take 5! Sounds like someone making a movie. My students want to make stop action videos about our science topics. Imagine how well they must understand the concept in order to animate it. We have the camera and software, now we need the props. Watch out Hollywood, Science Rules!

I teach 6th grade science in a public school in a growing suburban town.

Like many areas, our district is on a tight budget. Our district focuses on improving scores in math and reading, sometimes leaving science and technology waiting. Middle school students learn more by doing than reading, and science class is the perfect place to make discoveries.

My Project

Why would a science class need arts and crafts supplies? You might be inspiring the next producer for a science channel show. Students understand and retain knowledge when they can use and apply it in the real world. If they can teach someone else about a topic then they truly understand it. My students will make stop action animations using these supplies. Picture foam shaped trees on scene drawn on construction paper, bits of green clay make leaves, pipe cleaners turn into bees, foam shapes become the sun, and the letters spell "summer". Snap!the bees move a bit followed by another snap! Soon we have 20 shots and the leaves turn color and pumpkins arrive, the words change to "fall". Snap! Snap! The final product is an animation about the change of seasons. Envision the excitement and pride the students have in their work. This simple idea continues with the water cycle, cloud formation, rock cycle and many more concepts. We just need scenery to go with our camera/laptop/software.
